The Current education system for the Deaf has major gaps in teaching concepts and communication methodology. DEF believes in the bilingual system of education wherein students are taught through both Indian Sign Language and English. This enables a Deaf person to learn and work easily with hearing persons in day to day life.

The program prepares professional Indian Sign Language (ISL) Interpreters to enable effective communication between Deaf and hearing communities across education, employment, healthcare, and public services, with strong focus on ISL proficiency, ethics, and practical training.

DTISL – Diploma in Teaching Indian Sign Language

A specialized diploma course to build certified and capable ISL teaching professionals.
The course emphasizes Indian Sign Language linguistics, Deaf culture, teaching methodology, and classroom practice, preparing graduates to teach ISL in educational institutions and training centers.

Literacy within the Indian deaf community is way below the national average due to oral teaching, insufficient accessibility infrastructure and unaffordability to private tuitions. This has deprived them of good employment opportunities and brighter future. Thus, DEF envisioned the integrated education model under the DEF Academy to provide comprehensive academic support to deaf students pursuing higher education

We have partnered with Osmania University, Annamalai University, Indira Gandhi National Open University alongside the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education to impart matriculation and degree programmes in Indian Sign Language. Our deaf instructors use high quality audio-visual aids to provide conceptual clarity to the deaf students.

With a user friendly interface, EduSign Academy aims to provide Matriculation and Degree programmes for deaf students. Based on the syllabi of Telangana State’s Board of Higher Education and Osmania University along with Distance Education wing of Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu currently, the application aims to expand deaf literacy in the remotest corners of the country.

Unemployment has been a major challenge in the Indian deaf community. It hinders the socioeconomic growth of deaf individuals and makes them easy targets for anti social activities. Hence, DEF established a fully dedicated placement cell to address this issue. We integrate our office readiness and skills programme and then collaborate with companies that believe in establishing an inclusive workspace, to place the deaf in roles that fit their potential. Currently we placed over 6000+ deaf people in companies like Welspun, Tech Mahindra etc.

Sign Care is an innovative telemedicine healthcare facility dedicated to provide basic healthcare services for deaf individuals in collaboration with Kims Foundation & Research Centre (KFRC).

The team consists of a qualified physician, an experienced manager (deaf) and a professional Indian Sign Language (ISL) interpreter, all working together to ensure clear & effective communication.

Through secure video consultations and comfortable offline consultations too, we offer convenient and accessible medical care, breaking down language barriers, and promoting health equity.

At Sign Care, we are committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care tailored to the unique needs of the deaf community.

Inclusivity is only possible when we bridge communication gaps in the society. This is only possible if we are able generalise sign language usage in non deaf people and make them aware of deaf culture. Hence, under the DEF ISL initiative we conduct certified Indian Sign Language classes from basic to advanced levels for individuals and corporate employees.

We also offer interpreter services for deaf people in hospitals, schools, police stations etc. Recently, we also began to help organisations create accessibility videos for its deaf employees under this initiative.

The DEF ISL app makes the learning of sign language easy, accessible and interesting. Packed with 60,000+ easy-to-understand signs and phrases, in-built videos, illustrations, this easy-to-navigate app can be used both by adults and children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The customized mobile app is available for download on both IOS and Android platforms. DEF-ISL offers the opportunity for even those without hearing problems to learn sign language and thereby reach out to the Deaf more easily. This App has tremendous significance for the education of Deaf children as well.

Our work with Deaf youth is centred on giving them a Progressive outlook and building a positive self-image, thus Helping them to build their lives with confidence. To this end, DEF conducts seminars to help Deaf young people Prepare themselves to handle the situations they will come Across due to their deafness. The seminars and camps help in Developing positive attitudes, building leadership skills and Inculcating a sense of responsibility and team spirit among Them. These events include activities like river rafting, rock Climbing, rappelling, trekking and the like.

Strong women make prosperous societies. Empowerment of deaf women has always be a key priority at DEF. We host numerous workshops and seminars to impart awareness on women’s health, financial independence, self-defense , mental wellbeing etc in order to boost their confidence and help them find their calling. It brings us great joy when we say that the workforce at DEF are predominantly deaf women!

DEF believes that bringing up deaf children and preparing them for a better future is very important. Hence, we organize an annual Children’s Mela where deaf children are given the opportunity to forget their disability and enjoy themselves through activities alongside interacting with other children which benefits their overall growth. We host puppet shows, mime or theatre shows for them and an annual painting and quiz competition to assure them that their disability doesn’t define their right to dream big in life.

Each year, Deaf EnAbled Foundation recognizes the work of outstanding students and teachers in various Deaf schools in Hyderabad and Chennai through a unique awarding ceremony “Helen Keller Students’ Award and Annie Sullivan Teachers’ Award (Recognition of Academic Excellence Award) in honour of the wonderful humanists who dreamt of an inclusive world.

Leadership Training initiative is a big step towards securing the future of the Indian deaf community. DEF strongly believes that to build an inclusive society it is essential that we invest in the leadership skills of the next generation and that the well trained, well informed and groomed leaders can help in finding solutions to uplift the socioeconomic status of the community. Thus we focus on conducting sessions with personalities from various industries to inspire young minds.

Under this initiative, DEF recognizes the work of outstanding deaf students in various Deaf schools in Hyderabad, Chennai and other branches. Best students are evaluated on the basis of their overall performance in academics, sports, theatre and other extracurricular activities alongside their skills in communication and their effectiveness as a role model for the other children in the school. These children are honoured with a plaque of recognition, a citation, and a scholarship amount for the next year.

As a Mark of our respect and appreciation for the years of dedicated service and support that teachers give in nurturing Deaf children, we also host the annual Teachers’ Awards..

Deaf EnAbled Foundation has always cared deeply to build a society that provides equal opportunities of growth for every individual irrespective of their disability and also to ensure that no communication barrier hinders this process. So, it has been a pleasure that the Government of India has recognised our efforts by publishing an article of our dear Founder and President Shri TKM Sandeep in the September edition of the Mann Ki Baat magazine..
